Baptism is the first sacrament of the Catholic Church. Its purpose is to free us from original sin and be reborn as sons and daughters of God. Through Baptism we are welcomed into God's family, the Church, and participate in its life and mission. "Baptism is the sacrament of regeneration through water in the word" (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1213).
